This week in the workshop we were presented with a BMW F 7 series with a whole host of electrical faults, this particular BMW had done the usual rounds and where other garages had failed, we succeeded in accurately diagnosing and repairing the fault.

the car wouldn’t start and all the dash warning lights were illuminated including electronic transmission fault, ESP fault, engine malfunction.

What made this job challenging was we had no communication to the electronic gearbox with the scan tool with the main FT CAN network shut down. BMW uses a very high speed CAN network called FT to communicate between control modules. All evidence suggested a problem on this network or gear box module pulling the network down.

We quickly worked through the system and checked power at the gearbox and checked the CAN wake up line for 12v, no power.

we then checked the socket connector block found under the bonnet which comes from the fuse box passenger side  down the gearbox mechatronics unit and found a problem with the wiring connection.

After we quickly identified the cause of the fault we repaired the loom and was then able to communicate with the mechatronics control module and clear the rest of the fault codes.

Job done !!
