In the workshop today we have a VW transporter (T5) 2.5 174 in for poor and intermittent starting problem. We quickly diagnosed and rectified the problem by using our very own designed fuel pressure gauge.

These PD injection systems should run at 0 bar pressure @ idle which broken down is .5 bar priming and -.5 bar suction pump = 0 bar.

As you can clearly see with our gauge the pressure is @ .5 bar @idle speed, when we shut the tap closed it should fairly quickly generate negative pressure @ .5 bar.

The results have shown that the problem with this particular vehicle is failure of the suction pump located on the side of the head which acts as a vacuum pump and fuel suction pump.

VW transporter intermittent start problem, VW transporter T5 diagnostics

VW transporter intermittent none start problem caused by faulty tandem pump located on side of engine. Running @ .5 bar @idle (caused by faulty suction pump)

VW transporter T5 diagnostics fuel pump

Fuel pump pressure @ idle (new tandem fuel pump) ok @ 0 bar pressure

Once we fitted the new pump the fuel pressure returned to the nominal value @ idle of 0 bar with healthy flow proving the efficiency of the suction pump on the head. The van no starts impeccably every time. Another happy customer.
